9 May Dear friend!
I've finished everything [1]. In the post tomorrow I'm sending you 1) the 3rd act, which needs to go off to Batalina [2], and 2) the introduction, which can be given directly to N. L. Langer [3]. I'm taking myself off to Petersburg today. I've been summoned there because N. D. Kondratyev is mortally ill, and he wants to see me. God knows how long I'll stay there; however, I hope within a week to be in Moscow. Lord, how glad I am to have finished this drawn-out and painstaking work! I would now be a completely happy man, were it not for poor Kondratyev's distressing illness! Until we meet, keep well. My regards to everyone. Yours P. Tchaikovsky |
