26 October 1887

Gracious mistress!
Aleksandra Petrovna!

If you won't be good enough to stay on Wednesday (evening) in Petersburg, then I will treat your refusal as a grievous insult [1].

Your most humble servant,

P. Tchaikovsky

Sasha, please stay!

Notes and References

  1. Tchaikovsky was writing in a jocular manner concerning the invitation he had extended to the whole Jurgenson family to see him conduct the third performance of The Enchantress at the Mariinsky Theatre in Saint Petersburg — a performance which had been repeatedly postponed due to illness amongst the cast. It eventually took place on Friday 30 October/11 November.
