17 ноября 1887 г[ода] с[ело] Майданово Добрейший Павел Михайлович! При вчерашнем нашем свидании Вами была высказана одна болезненно кольнувшая меня вещь, на которую я только что хотел ответить, как вошли Альтани, Барцал, Корсов, и мне нельзя уже было возобновить этого разговора. Вам известно, что Музыкальное общество всегда испытывает затруднения относительно оркестра и что в этом отношении оно в постоянной зависимости от Дирекции имп[ераторских] театров. Стоит только, чтобы лица заправляющие оркестром, были враждебны к Муз[ыкальному] общ[еству] — и оно должно испытывать бесчисленные затруднения. До сих пор хотя по временам враждебность вспыхивала, — но Бог миловал, кое-как дела улаживались. Теперь я усматриваю и в словах Альтани, и в тоне, с которым Вы говорите о Муз[ыкальном] общ[естве], такую нескрываемую антипатию к нашему Обществу, что я начинаю серьёзно опасаться. Признаюсь Вам, что я решительно не постигаю, откуда эта враждебность и чем мы так восстановили против себя театр? В прошлом году, по недоразумению, артисты могли счесть себя оскорблёнными одним обстоятельством, и тогда я энергически за них заступился и все обошлось к обоюдному удовлетворению. Почему теперь такая злоба и враждебность? Мне кажется, что вся суть в каких-то мелких, личных счётах. Музык[альное] общ[ество] достойно всякого сочувствия и поощрения со стороны дирекции театров, ибо оно преследует цели серьёзные и заслуги его для развития музыкальности в Москве громадны. Кто-то и зачем-то находит нужным раздувать ни на чем не основанную враждебность, и даже такие добрые люди, как Вы и Альтани (несмотря на лестное для меня сочувствие Ваше к одному из директоров — вашему покорному слуге), настроены так, что как будто Вам приятно было бы ставить наше Общество в затруднение. Напр[имер], Вы вчера сказали мне, что 29 числа оркестр не свободен по причине репетиции «Тамары»!!!!!!!! Стоит Вам или Альтани захотеть — и оркестр, конечно, будет не свободен и мы, конечно, будем поставлены в очень неловкое и тяжёлое положение, — но зачем это нужно? Я не прошу Вас ни о чём, кроме одного: отвлёкшись от ни на чем не основанного враждебного настроения к Муз[ыкальному] общ[еству], вспомнить, что во главе его стоят люди честные, любящие своё дело, очень благодарные театру за оркестр и вовсе не заслуживающие, что бы Вы лишали их Вашего сочувствия и, в случае нужды, помощи. 17 November 1887 Maydanovo village Most kind Pavel Mikhaylovich! At our meeting yesterday, something was said that pained me deeply, which I was just about to respond to when Altani, Bartsal and Korsov entered, and I could no longer reopen the conversation. You know that the Musical Society is always experiencing difficulties regarding the orchestra, and that in this respect it is continually dependent on the Directorate of the Imperial Theatres. It only needs the people managing the orchestra to be hostile to the Musical Society to cause countless difficulties. Thus far, although hostilities have flared up from time to time, somehow the matters have been resolved, with God's grace. Now I discern from Altani's words, and in the tone in which you speak about the Musical Society, such overt antipathy towards our Society, that I am starting to have serious concerns. I confess to you that I have absolutely no idea where this hostility is coming from from, and how we ourselves have developed an antipathy towards the theatre? Last year, owing to a misunderstanding, the artists had occasion to considered themselves offended; I then energetically interceded on their behalf, and everything turned out to mutual satisfaction. Why is there now such malice and hostility? It seems to me that the whole thing is down to some petty, personal settling of scores. The Musical Society deserves every sympathy and encouragement on the part of the theatre directorate, because it is pursuing serious aims and its services towards the advancement of musicality in Moscow are enormous. Someone, for some reason, finds it necessary to stir up unwarranted hostility, and if even good people like you and Altani (despite your flattering sympathies towards your humble servant as one of the directors) were so inclined, then you could place our Society in difficulties. For example, you told me yesterday that 29 members of the orchestra were unavailable due to rehearsals of "Tamara"!!!!!!!! If you or Altani so wish it, then indeed the orchestra will not be available and we, of course, will be placed in a very awkward and grievous position — but why is this? I am not asking you for anything apart from this: to step back from an unfounded hostile attitude towards the Musical Society, and to remember that at its head are honest people who love their work, and who are very grateful to the theatre for the orchestra; they do not at all deserve to be deprived of your sympathy and assistance whenever it is required.
