Frolovskoye village

Thank you, golubchik, for your congratulations. I arrived here safely and I'm very pleased with my new home; it isn't as elegant as the Maydanovo lodge, but it's far more spacious and, so to speak, more romantic, because of the wonderful antique furniture and other items. As regards the situation, the garden, the proximity of the woods, the freedom, and absence of summer holidaymakers — this is all terribly to my taste. Unfortunately I'm thoroughly unwell, with a runny nose, cough and temperature. Sergey Ivanovich spent all day with me yesterday.

Now a whole series of requests:

1) I forgot to tell you that I need to send Anatoly 300 rubles, which I owe him.

2) I forgot to carry out one of Anatoly's instructions: kindly have one of the clerks go to the military tailor Zhivago somewhere on Tverskaya, and order fifth-grade stitching for officials of the judicial department, and then send it to Anatoly when it's ready. Whoever you send to Zhivago will have to enquire how much the stitching costs, and you will kindly pay this amount and deduct it from the 300 rubles I owe. Have I explained this procedure clearly?

3) Please, kindly instruct all my sacred musical compositions to be sent to Town of Dubno, Vilna Province, Municipal School, to Konstantin Martynovich Koninsky. This remarkably likeable gentleman will soon be writing to you about purchasing a harmonium by installments. If you can, offer him encouragement. Judging from his letters, he's a very honourable and good person.

Whereupon, forgive me for being a nuisance, and until we meet!

Lord, how good my Prague watch is!!!

I'm going to Piter on Thursday.

Yours P. Tchaikovsky
