Town of Klin, village of Frolovskoye

Golubchik Zhorzh! The news reported to you by Valeryan Aleksandrovich Panayev is perfectly true. Only one thing is incorrect: I've promised to venture to Scandinavia with Mr Herman for no more than six weeks in the winter, not the autumn, between 1 January and 1 April. I won't be budging from Russia in the autumn, with the exception of just a short trip to Prague, in the event that one of my operas is staged there. It's remarkable that Herman is trying to seduce my Tatochka, yet above all I agreed because they promised me thatI will almost certainly be driven around with Madame Panayeff-Kartsoff. At the same time I was confused by the fact that Tatochka is singing his winter at the Italian Opera, so how will she go to Sweden? But I was consoled by the thought that we will probably either be gadding around at Lent, or your Mr Lago will find it possible to grant leave of absence. Thereupon, it seems to me that the snag is precisely your disagreement with the terms of my proposition to you, which obliges me to fulfil the promised tournée specifically during the winter. I don't know Herman personally, but I engaged Zet and made him my official representative as a consequence of the most flattering opinions of everyone acquainted with him, without exception, that he is a very honest and fine person. Moreover, I thought his personality came across very sympathetically. So, as to your question of what to reply to Herman, say that provided arrangements with Lago do not interfere, then you can begin relations with him, i.e. Herman, but assuredly on the same terms as me, i.e. one week before departure one third of the entire proposed amount must be paid. This condition was demanded for me by Zet, and I think it is very reasonable. I have nothing else to say, except that I will be inexpressibly happy, content and fortunate, if I go together with dear Aleksandra Valeryanovna and you.

I was awfully and sincerely rejoicing with all my heart at Tatochka's success this winter. I am sure that from now on everything will go crescendo and that all the past tribulations of her career will fade like a dream.

I'm working hard; writing a symphony and many other things. I kiss Aleksandra Valeryanovna's hands warmly, and you, dear fellow, I hug tightly. I cover Olya with my kisses.

I'm sending a musical note, for the young lady.
