Most respected, most kind
Yelizaveta Andreyevna!

Owing to some very complicated circumstances it will not be possible for me to attend your examinations. I fear that you will be angry with me for failing to keep my promise or, God forbid, that you will conclude from my absence that I have little interest in the successes of your students. Be sure that it is simply grievous for me that I will not make it to the Conservatory on the day of your examinations. One day I shall give you a full explanation of why it is unpleasant and difficult for me to be at the Conservatory at the present moment. It will all blow over, and in the next academic year I hope to visit to the Conservatory often and see you.

I fulfilled your commission regarding the information about the proposed concert a while ago. Specifically, I wrote to Brandukov in order that he would approach the concert organizer, explain exactly what is the matter, and ask this gentleman (whose name I cannot recall at this moment) to gather the necessary particulars and send you a detailed reply to the Conservatory, in Moscow. Please see that this letter reaches you before you make arrangements to leave Moscow.

Whereupon, I ask you again, dear Yelizaveta Andreyevna, not to be angry with me. My heartfelt wish is that you are left completely satisfied by the examinations.

I kiss your hands.

Sincerely devoted,

P. Tchaikovsky
