Most respected Nikolay Osipovich!

Before leaving, I decided to devote two days to reviewing "The Queen of Spades" (piano reduction), a second edition of which P. I. Jurgenson is intending to print during the autumn.

Incidentally, in order to prevent all sorts of misunderstandings concerning the tempo, I decided to metronomize the whole opera. But it transpires that when designating the tempi in the original edition, I made a plenty of slips, and was much too stingy in indicating changes of pace. In this respect the 2nd edition shall be impeccable. But what to do about the full scores, in which the tempi ought to be in full agreement with the piano reduction? Tomorrow I will take a copy of the opera with all the corrections to Pyotr Ivanovich and discuss with him how to ensure that you receive the accurate and correct tempo markings with metronomic indications as soon as possible. Or perhaps I might still manage to write out all my changes for you today and send them forthwith. Be that as it may, I ask you, dear Nikolay Osipovich, firstly, not to be angry with me for setting an additional task for you and your subordinates, and secondly, to insert all my changes and metronome markings into the relevant parts of the full score. It is essential that E. F. Nápravník, on his return from holiday, should a full score have to hand with the correct tempi. I ask you also to inform Mr Choirmaster, who will soon be beginning to rehearse the chorus, that you have metronomic values, and that it would not be a bad thing for to prepare with them accordingly.

Once again, I ask you not to be angry with me.

Sincerely devoted and respectful,

P. Tchaikovsky

P. S. I absent-mindedly began to write the letter on a used sheet. Excuse me for that too.
