Three days ago, when I was with you, I omitted to appeal to you with another very important request. I promised kindly, affable Khokhlov [1] that I would seek your permission for his hundredth performance in the role of the Demon to be advertised in the posters. This is his fervent wish, I understand, and I consider it entirely deserving of the enthusiastic ovations to be expected if the public were to be made aware of this unprecedented jubilee on our stage. I urge you most earnestly to please grant Khokhlov's request. He is loved by his colleagues, the public, operatic authors, and the ladies of Moscow — he is in a word, a universal favourite, and you will delight everybody by acceding to his request [2].

Sincerely devoted,

P. Tchaikovsky

Notes and References

  1. Pavel Akinfievich Khokhlov (1854–1919), a Russian baritone who had performed in a number of Tchaikovsky's operas.
  2. This request was granted, and the hundredth appearance of Khokhlov in Anton Rubinstein's opera The Demon on 21 November/3 December 1891 was advertised on the theatrical posters, and warmly reviewed in the press.
