Голубушка M[ada]me Кату!

Golubushka Madame Katu!

I received your letter whilst boarding the carriage to go to Moscow. I'm like a spinning top in a carnival whirlwind here, and therefore you won't be surprised that my reply will not be especially detailed. I read your letter with the keenest pleasure; I'm glad that you have found peace, and pleasant vistas have opened up. I cannot help but be proud of my insight. Did I not tell you that with more or less large sums of money you can sweeten his life and infuse his spirit with kind and gentle feelings, strange as it may seem — but that's just the way the man is. He has a pressing need to waste money, and the longer he cannot satisfy this need, the unhappier he is, and as a result, the angrier, harsher and gloomier he becomes. Regarding your intention not to go to Switzerland, I really don't know what to say, except that I'm happy at the prospect of seeing you more often if you stay in Russia. In fact, I'm far from sure this what you ought to do. Perhaps moving to Switzerland would be a good tactic on your part. Let him live with his beloved Anna Leontyevna, or in the company of his mother, or some other combination — and then he'll more clearly understand that the best companion on the path of life is his [...] carefree, jealous, ecstatic Katu it won't be. However, this is only a suggestion. For the children, of course, it's better to remain in Russia. Indeed, you will be very homesick in the lovely, but wistful Switzerland. Anyway, we'll discuss everything soon.

Yours P. Tchaikovsky
