18 октября [18]92 Милый мой Толя! Только что вернулся из Москвы, куда ездил по делам. Мне говорили, что и ты там недавно был, — жалко, что мы не съехались. Теперь только несколько дней осталось провести в тишине и покое; в конце недели уже должен быть в Петербурге к началу репетиций «Иоланты». Ты спрашиваешь, где я буду жить в Петербурге. Ещё сам не знаю. Знаю только, что у Модеста невозможно. Всего вероятнее, что я поселюсь опять в гостинице «Россия». Уж очень там удобный у меня номер. Очень зовёт Николай Ильич, — да слишком далеко, хотя я все ещё колеблюсь. Это им ужасно желательно. Мне нравится что ты перестал с излишнею страстностью относиться к вопросу о дальнейшей службе. Чем более философски будешь смотреть на это, тем лучше во всех отношениях, даже мне кажется, что тебе, может быть, несколько вредило то, что ты так усиленно стремился к губернаторству. Я убеждён, что оно придёт скорее, нежели ты теперь думаешь, именно потому, что перестал страдать от мании губернаторства. Я непременно побываю у тебя в Нижнем, но позднее. Теперь, Бог даст, увидимся в Питере. Хорошо, что ты имеешь время для чтения. Бедная Паня! Передай ей мои приветствия и Тату крепко целую. Массу писем нужно ещё написать. Обнимаю! П. Чайковский

18 October 1892 My dear Tolya! I've just returned from Moscow, where I went on business. I was told that you had been there recently—what a pity that we couldn't get together. Now I've just a few days left to spend in peace and quiet: at the end of the week I must be in Petersburg for the start of rehearsals of "Iolanta". You asked where I'm going to be staying in Petersburg . I don't yet know myself. I just know that Modest's is impossible. In all probability I'll be stopping at the "Russia" hotel again . My room there is really very comfortable. And close to call on Nikolay Ilyich, yet far enough away for me to hesitate. I'd like this terribly. I'm pleased that you're no longer obsessed with the idea of promotion. The more philosophically you look at it, the better in all respects; even though it seems to me that you are capable, it was somewhat to your detriment that you sought the governorship so single-mindedly. I'm convinced that it will come sooner than you imagine, precisely because you are no longer suffering from a mania for the governorship. I'll certainly come to see you in Nizhny, but not just yet. For now, God willing, I'll see you in Piter. It's good that you have time for reading. Poor Panya! Give her my regards, and a firm kiss for Tata. I have masses of letters still to write. I hug you!
