Cher Mr Stanford!

P. Tschaikowsky

Dear Mr Stanford!

Once again I am late in replying to you, courtesy of the nomadic life that I have had to lead for some time now. Thank you for allowing "Francesca" to be performed [1].

In addition to the instruments included on your list, I require a Cor Anglais and a 4th trumpet. Regarding percussion, I also need a tam-tam. I beg you, dear colleague, to allow me to engage the services of three extra artists in my work. (The Cor Anglais could not possibly be played by the 2nd oboe, as it is required separately from the two oboes.)

I shake your hand warmly.

P. Tchaikovsky

Notes and References

  1. In a letter of 10/22 February 1893, Stanford had informed Tchaikovsky of the orchestral forces available for his forthcoming concert at Cambridge on 31 May/12 June 1893, at which Tchaikovsky was to conduct his fantasia Francesca da Rimini.
