Town of Klin 5 April 1893 Dear Lev Abramovich!
I'm hastening to reply to your nice letter, which I've just read upon my return from Petersburg where I spent the holidays. 1) I personally don't know Schlözer [1] as a pianist, i.e. I've heard him but a long time ago and as far as I recall I didn't particularly like him (he was very inaccurately playing Anton"s 4th concerto, directed by Nikolay Grigoryevich, although his not without virtuosic chic). They say that he's now become a big success and generally enjoys a good reputation. I don't know anything about him as a conductor and I had no idea that he'd ever been involved in it. I know even less about him as an administrator. He is presently in Moscow and, it seems, not particularly content with his situation. I've frequently thought about candidates for Balabolkin"s [2] position, and amongst others, about the following people: 1) Felix Mikhaylovich Blumenfeld [3], a beautiful pianist and most splendid musician, and no mean composer and a conductor. He holds the position of junior teacher at the Petersburg conservatory. 2) Schulz-Evler [4], a remarkable pianist in terms of technique and a most outstanding composer. He has a position at the musical school in Kharkov. The first of these seems to me especially suitable. 2) Saint-Saëns will probably not accept an invitation: he's been hiding away for several years in Algeria or the West Indies and doesn't go anywhere. To me, it seems better to invite Nápravník for all 4 concerts and write to him, saying: "come to show us your conducting skills and kindly play classic works by Berlioz, Liszt, Wagner, and also Russian ones, including one or two of yours". I embrace you warmly. Ardent bows to Natalya Nikolayevna. Yours, P. Tchaikovsky |
