London 17/29 May Golubchik Tolya! I feel very guilty that I didn't write from Petersburg as promised. I spent a few very pleasant days there. I left in a good mood but in less than an hour, I started to feel strangled by that unbearable sadness, which is hard to describe, that always follows me now whenever I go abroad. This dreadful feeling hasn't left me for a minute since then and is coming ever faster to a crescendo. Of course, I'm doing this for the last time. All my thoughts are heading towards all this finishing up and my return. I won't come straight home but will go via Paris where I will spend one or two days (I have some business with Ziloti, the Directorate of the Petersburg music society entrusted me with persuading him to take the position of professor of the Conservatory) and via the Tirol, where I will spend three days at Menter's and then go to Grankino. I promised Bob and I want to visit this charming place in the steppe for a little bit. From there I will go to Nikolay Ilyich and then to you. I'll visit you at the end of summer and we'll go to see Panya together. I arrived in London this morning. I don't like this ugly city. I could hardly find a place — all the hotels were full. There will be a concert on 20 May/1 June and then I will have to linger here for 7 days, on the 11th and 12th there will be celebrations at Cambridge and on the 13th, i.e. our 1st June, I will head back. I'm constantly thinking about all of those dearest to me. Only when being apart, abroad, under the oppression of that melancholic loneliness do I feel how strong is my love for you. Ask darling Emma to write. Kiss Panechka and Tata tenderly. Yours, P. Tchaikovsky Redgent Street, Hôtel Dieudonné |
