Дорогой Иван Николаевич! Я виноват, что долго не отвечал вам на последнее письмо Ваше. Отчасти причиной тому хлопоты, сопряжённые с концертом Музыкального общества, которым я дирижировал, и приготовлением оркестровых голосов новой симфонии, отчасти же колебания в разрешении вопроса о поездке в Одессу. Ах, Иван Николаевич, если бы Вы знали, до чего эта поездка мне неудобна и по многим причинам затруднительна! Мне неудобно распространяться об этом, ибо выходит, что я как будто стараюсь увеличить в глазах Ваших величину и значение жертвы, которую принесу на алтарь дружбы с Вами! А ведь я даже не уверен, что в самом деле жертва эта принесёт Вам пользу. Но положим, что так. Теперь спрашивается: в какое время наименее трудно и неудобно к Вам ехать? Взвесив и сообразив все обстоятельства, прихожу к заключению, что в феврале не следует мне быть в Одессе хотя бы уже потому, что на февраль приглашён в Одессу в Музыкальное общество Н. А. Римский-Корсаков, и я явлюсь как будто для того, что бы отвлечь внимание одесситов от его высокосимпатичой личности. Затем из всего срока единственные свободные для меня недели две приходятся на конец декабря и начало января. Если так я и сделаю, то имейте в виду, что не позже 8 января я уже должен быть в Петербурге, ибо 15-го дирижирую концертом. Итак, потрудитесь назначить время моего пребывания среди Вас между 15 декабря и 5 января, причём имейте в виду, что более недели остаться в Одессе я не могу. Вы пишете в последнем письме о распределении ролей, но я не понял: в «Мазепе» или в «Иоланте». Это для меня затруднительно; предоставляю распределение Вам, капельмейстеру и режиссёру. Обнимаю Вас. П. Dear Ivan Nikolayevich! Forgive me for taking so long to answer your last letter . In part the reason has been the fuss surrounding the Musical Society's concert which I conducted , and the preparation of the orchestral parts for my new symphony , and in part my hesitation in deciding about the trip to Odessa. Ah, Ivan Nikolayevich, if only you knew how inconvenient this trip is for me and how difficult for so many reasons! I am uncomfortable enlarging on this, as it may seem that I am, as it were, trying to magnify in your eyes the size and significance of the sacrifice which I shall make on the altar of our friendship! And I am not even sure that this sacrifice will in fact be of any benefit to you. But let us assume that it will. Now the question arises: what is the least difficult and inconvenient time to come to you? After weighing and considering all the circumstances, I have come to the conclusion that I should not be in Odessa in February, if only because the Musical society in Odessa has invited N. A. Rimsky-Korsakov for February, and I might seem to be showing up in order to divert the attention of the Odessans from his highly attractive personality. So for the entire period the only two weeks or so I have free fall at the end of December and the beginning of January. If I am to do it that way, bear in mind that I must be in Petersburg no later than 8 January, as I am conducting a concert on the 15th. Therefore, kindly fix a time for my visit to you between 15 December and 5 January, bearing in mind that I cannot stay more than a week in Odessa. In your last letter you write of distributing roles, but I do not understand: in "Mazepa" or "Iolanta"? This is difficult for me; I leave the distribution to you, the conductor, and the producer.
