Dear friend!

I've just received your letter. I was infuriated by Bochechkarov's presumptuousness, for which even the pox is no excuse. He had just received 30 rubles from me through Alyosha; he could acquire the rest from his other friends and acquaintances. Be that as it may, I didn't want to hear that you've given him 50 rubles. Kindly add them to my account. But I urge you henceforth never to give Nikolay Lvovich a kopek unless I ask you to.

I'm almost as moping and homesick here as I was in Moscow. Were it not for my brothers and my father, for whose sake I really came, then I wouldn't have stayed a single minute here. Worst of all is that I have an endless number of assorted relatives here, and I'm stuck up to my neck in this ocean of kinship. The majority of these people are completely alien to me, and yet it's necessary for me to be here. Lord! When will I ultimately even make it to Kamchatka, if only to live in freedom and solitude!

Merci for Balakirev. He's actually a kind and good person, but there's no-one else I want to see less. He is a very difficult and despotically demanding companion.

The children's pieces can be printed. As far as the 12 pieces are concerned, then in any case it's essential for me to review them — I've never seen them. Therefore, my friend, kindly send them here, and furthermore as soon as possible, because I'm not staying here long, and in any case, no later than 1st November. Rubinstein came here today; I had lunch with him just after his arrival. After lunch he left immediately for the Grand Duke's. Tomorrow we'll be having dinner at Laroche's.

Your "vez'ti" and Balakirev's "ves'ti" are equally incorrect. It ought to be vesti. Correspondence is neither "conveyed", nor "managed" — but rather conducted. I saw Bessel, who is hurling thunder and lightning at Osip Ivanovich because of "Onegin".

Farewell, golubchik.

Yours P. Tchaikovsky

A gentle bow to Sofya Ivanovna.
