10 March 1893 Dear Pavel Mikhaylovich!
I am awfully sorry that I am unable to approach you personally with the following request [1]. Among the singers in your forthcoming theatre trials will be a Miss Laub [2]. She is the daughter of the unforgettable great violinist. She sang for one season with Pryanishnikov; she is very musical and far from devoid of voice. She has no pretensions! Even if it were only for the smallest salary, could you not take her on? For God's sake, golubchik, please help: she and her mother are in terrible poverty. Sincerely devoted, P. Tchaikovsky |
