Vichy 30/18 June 1892 Most respected Pavel Fyodorovich!
I have only just received your letter from Boyarka. I am extremely sorry that you have parted company with Ippolit Petrovich. It goes without saying that I am happy to recommend you if you have somewhere in mind. I do not have the opportunity to place you, as you put it, because there are no places suitable for you within my control. So far as I know, there are no vacancies for a director neither in the imperial theatre nor elsewhere in the capital, but if it comes to your attention that there is business for you there, then, I repeat, I shall very willingly intercede on your behalf. So far as America is concerned, then I confess that your idea of travelling there surprises me. Without knowing the English language, how on earth would you hope to find employment there? I could give you recommendations for Damrosch and other persons there, certainly — but these people generally have nothing to do with the theatre, and they can be of no use to you whatsoever. I strongly advise you to abandon what seems to me a strange, completely incomprehensible idea. But if all the same you still wish to take such a gamble, I will provide you with letters without any difficulty. Once again I must express my regret that you have parted company with I. P. Pryanishnikov, who always spoke of you with the highest praise. Sincerely devoted, P. Tchaikovsky |
