Tolya! We arrived in Paris early this morning. We had a safe journey, but I was very irritated by the chatter of some Belgian count. We'll be staying at the Hôtel Belle-Vue, where Kondratyev lives, and I'm very much regretting it — it's a beastly hotel. On the way, particularly on the first day, I was very sad about Modya, Kolya and Aleksey, who left Rome with me for Naples on the same day. I'm very glad that it worked out this way; they say that at the moment Naples is so divine that they will notice my absence less strongly than if they had remained without me in Rome. As always, I like Paris, and most importantly, I feel at home here, but after Rome and that charming spring, which set in during the last days of my stay there, it seems somehow prosaically vulgar to me. Nevertheless, I'll be spending three days here, as expected; I'm leaving on the on the evening of the 2nd, on the evening of the 3rd I'll be in Berlin, on the 4th I'm leaving for Petersburg, and I'll see you on the 6th. It's as warm here today as it was in Rome, but what a difference! Everything there is already green, but here the trees are still bare, and the heat seems like something abnormal. I'm just off to the Bois de Boulogne, and in the evening I'll be at the theatre with Kondratyev. Hugs and kisses. |
