Tchaikovsky in Alapayevsk
In 1824, an internationally renowned metallurgy plant opened at Alapayevsk on the banks of the Neyva, of which Ilya Tchaikovsky (the composer's father) was the manager from May 1849 until September 1852. During this time the Tchaikovsky family resided at Alapayevsk. The twins Anatoly and Modest were born here on 1/13 May 1850.
The composer himself left the town in August 1850, at the age of ten, when he was enrolled at the preparatory class of the Imperial School of Jurisprudence in Saint Petersburg.
In 1965, a commemorative museum was established at the site of the Tchaikovsky family home at Alapayevsk.
