25 July

My dear fellow!

Yesterday I received your letter from Moscow, which made me all the more overjoyed because since your departure I still haven't been able to recover, and yesterday I felt abominable in myself all day — out of sorts, and angry. Your letter has poured a healing balm onto my soul. I don't have anything serious, but all the same, I'm not in my normal healthy state. Amongst other things, I had a toothache for two days in a row, and even had une rage de dent, from which Roman Yefimovich, who happened to be here, saved me with a wonderful remedy, which I also recommend to you: chloroform. Yesterday the toothache continued, but it was already a distant remedy of the pain I had endured the day before. It seems to me that I am finally on the mend.

We are now in the final days of Anna and Sasha Peresleni's stay in Verbovka. They are both leaving on the 30th, Sunday. That same day I'll be leaving for Brailov, although Modest will be staying here for the time being. We'll probably meet around the 5th in Kiev and visit Kondratyev together, who isn't that far from Grankino.

Lyova returned from Chigirin the day before yesterday. In his absence, very significant events took place here, the last of which will surprise you: 1) the old woman Gorovaya died, and 2) A. I. Shidlovsky left the family for good. This happened three days ago, and here's why. Instead of studying with Vera, he spent the whole day making declarations of love to her, and drove the poor girl to the point that she went to complain to Sasha. In the evening there was a confrontation, the result of which was his resignation as a teacher. The next morning he left. No one is particularly sorry for him. Vera is exultant, Tasya too. Lyova is very pleased.

Yesterday, everyone, except me, Vera and Natalya Andreyevna, went to Kamenka again. In the evening we all gathered at Vysokoye and drank tea there. The evening was delightful, but I appreciated little it due to my ill health. Only towards the end, particularly after receiving your letter, did I feel well in myself.

Modest read me the continuation of his story. It's very good, but I'm somewhat alarmed by the mass of characters participating in it. In general, the story suffers from a lack of form, although individual episodes are very successful. Today is Anna's name day. I gave her 10 rubles. In the evening they're intending to go to the Verbovka woods. I have developed an unfathomable coolness towards hunting, and I'm very glad that Lyova isn't arranging anything in this respect. I kiss you, my golubchik. I wasn't altogether joking when I said I'd be in Piter at the end of August. I give you my word of honour that I'll be there.

Yours, P. Tchaikovsky
