2 июня 1889 г[ода] Дорогая Юлия Петровна! Вы спрашиваете, на какой сюжет пишу я свою балетную музыку. Он почерпнут из сказки Perrault «La Belle au bois dormant», и сценариум чрезвычайно эффектно и поэтично составлен самим Всеволожским. Сочинение музыки я уже окончил, а за инструментовку принялся 2 дня тому назад. Теперь буду все лето пригвождён к письменному столу своему, дабы, согласно обещанию, представить партитуру к началу сезона. Сюжета новой комедии, которую собирается писать брат Модест, я не знаю покамест. Я очень втянулся теперь в работу, и неопределённое нравственное томление, о коем писал Вам недавно, совершенно прошло. Да, чудесно теперь в деревне. От всей души желаю, чтобы пребывание на франц[узском] кладбище благоприятно отозвалось на Вашем здоровье. Не думаю, чтобы созерцание могил убитых 35 лет тому назад французов сообщило бы мрачный характер Вашему местопребыванию. Это было так давно, и Севастопольская эпопея так поэтична! Есть ли у Вас чтение? Имеете ли Вы понятие о новом большом русском литературном таланте Чехове? Если нет, то я охотно перешлю Вам его рассказы. По-моему, это будущий столп нашей словесности. Слышал я, что у Вас в Севастополе будет опера летом. А ведь это будет чудесно для Вас? Пожалуйста, передайте от меня почтительный поклон Софье Михайловне и приветствия обоим детям. 2 June 1889 Dear Yuliya Petrovna! You enquire about the subject of the ballet that I am writing the music for. It is drawn from Perrault's fairy tale "La Belle au bois dormant", and the scenario was compiled extremely effectively and poetically by Vsevolozhsky himself. I have already finished composing the music, and took up the instrumentation 2 days ago. Now I shall be pinned to my writing desk all summer, in order to present the score, as promised, for the start of the season. Meanwhile, I do not know the story of the new comedy that my brother Modest is intending to write. I am now very embroiled in my work, and the intangible moral languor that I wrote to you about not long ago has completely passed. Indeed, it is wonderful in the country now. I wish with all my soul that your stay in the French cemetery will have a beneficial effect on your health. I would not think that contemplating the graves of the French killed 35 years ago will lend a gloomy character to your whereabouts. It was so long ago, and the Sevastopol epic is so poetic! Do you have anything to read? Do you have any idea about the new great Russian literary talent Chekhov? If not, then I will gladly pass on his stories to you. In my opinion, he is a future cornerstone of our literature. I heard that you will have the opera in Sevastopol in the summer. But will this be wonderful for you?
