Симаки 9 авг[уста] 1879 г[ода] Спешу тебе сообщить о первых здешних впечатлениях. Они удивительно приятны. Домик старый-престарый, густой сад с вековыми дубами и липами, очень запущенный и именно поэтому-то и восхитительны, река в конце сада, удаление от завода, местечка, абсолютная тишина, необыкновенно комфортабельно устроенное помещение, состоящей из залы, огромного кабинета, столовой, спальни и Алёшиной комнаты, — всё это как нельзя более соответствует моим вкусам и наклонностям. Кругом усадьбы, поля, перелески, — где можно бродить никого не встречая, что я сейчас и сделал с невыразимым удовольствием. Наконец, в довершение всего, при мне состоит старый лакашка Леон, с которым нечего церемониться, повар, которого я не вижу, и кучер при фаэтоне с четвёркой, которою могу пользоваться сколько угодно. Не правда ли, чудна? Но увы! нет такой бачки меду, куда бы не затесалась ложка дегтю. Роль дёгтя играет близость Н[адежды] Ф[иларетовны] с её семействам и свитой. Хотя я совершенно убеждён, что никто беспокоить меня не будет, но всё-таки эта близость несколько смущает меня. Встретил меня вчера Пахульский, чего я очень опасался, и не только встретил, но проводил меня и просидел целый вечер. Однако ж, прощаясь, я сказал ему откровенно, что дней 7 хочу остаться совсем один, а что его я приглашу. Таким образом, я застраховал себя на довольно долгий срок. С невыразимым нетерпением жду от тебя письма. Ты тоже у меня ложка дегтю. Мне немножко совестно наслаждаться здешними благами, когда ты, бедненький, томишься в Петербурге. Обнимаю тебя с бесконечной нежностью. Твой, П. Чайковский Какая чудная эта Надежда Филаретовна!!!

Simaki 9 August 1879 I'm hastening to tell you about my first impressions here. They are surprisingly pleasant. The little house is ancient, the garden dense with centuries-old oaks and limes, very neglected and thereby delightful, there's a river at the end of the garden, it's far from the works, the village, in absolute silence; the accommodation is arranged exceptionally comfortably, consisting of a hall, a huge office, dining room, bedroom and Alyosha's room — all of this couldn't be more suited to my tastes and inclinations. All around are estates, fields, and groves, where you can wander around without meeting anyone, which is what I did just now with inexpressible pleasure. Finally, to top it all off, I have with me an old lackey Leon, with whom I have no need to stand on ceremony, a cook, whom I do not see, and a coachman with a phaeton and four horses which I can use as much as I see fit. Isn't this truly wonderful? Alas! There's no such thing as a barrel of honey without a spoonful of tar. The role of the tar is represented by the proximity of Nadezhda Filaretovna with her family and retinue. Although I'm absolutely certain that nobody will trouble me, this proximity still disconcerts me somewhat. Pachulski ran into me yesterday, which I'd been very wary of, and not only did he run into me, but he lingered and sat with me the whole evening. However, bidding him farewell, I told him frankly that I wanted to be completely alone for 7 days, and that I would invite him. Thus, I'e protected myself for quite a long time. I'm waiting for your letter with inexpressible impatience. You are also tar in the honey for me.
