21 апр[еля] Кам[нека] Вчера получил твоё письмо с описанием истории письма к А[лександре] В[алериановне]. Нечего и говорить, что письмо это я читал с невыразимым интересом н волнением, — но ты поступил безжалостно! Ведь ты остановился на самом интересном месте! С беспокойством и лихорадочным нетерпением жду продолжения. За самое написание письма весьма тебя хвалю. Это очень умно, ибо тот или другой конец, — но какой-нибудь конец нужен. Надеюсь, Толичка, что ты не падёшь духом в случае неблагоприятного ответа! Впрочем унизительного для твоего самолюбия в её отказе ничего не будет. Что касается ран сердца, то ты па опыту знаешь, что они излечимы и что время — могущественное средство против подобных бедствий. Мы провели последние дни в тревоге. Саша, несмотря на то, что все последнее время недомогала, собралась внезапно в Киев по поводу французской гувернантки, которую там для неё нашли. Три дни тому назад она уехала, а на другой день пришла от не я телеграмма с извещением, что она немножко нездоров а и с просьбой к Леве приехать за ней. Лева в тот же вечер уехал. Вчера мы целый день ждали от него обещанной депеши о состоянии Сашиного здоровья. Особенно Таня, бедная, очень тосковала. Депеша пришла сегодня утром. Она сообщает, что Саше лучше и что сегодня они выезжают. Конечно, ничего ужасного во всем этом нет, но случай этот подтверждает общее мнение, что Саше необходимо полечиться и отдохнуть. Мы с Модестом и с Таней решились энергически требовать, чтобы Саша отправилась в Карлсбад. Она страдает печенью и, кроме того, утомлена и имеет страшно расстроенные нервы последствие петербургской жизни и болезни всех детей. Весна делает исполинские успехи. Сирени начинают распускаться, и ландыши уже слегка показываются. Все это было бы чудесно, если б не было всё-таки маленьких беспокойств, мешающих полноте счастья. Между прочим и твой роман меня слегка беспокоит. Как я бы хотел поскорее узнать его развязку, а также насчёт твоего отпуска. 1-го мая я еду в Браилов и останусь там около недели. Дальнейшие планы не разъяснены. Они требуют соображения с твоими. Здесь предстоит целый ряд торжеств. Сегодня именины Алекс[андры] Ив[ановны], послезавтра — Сашины, 24 рождение Юрия, 25-го — моё, 1-го — Модестино. Вчера получено известие, что Саша Переслени, наконец, объявлена невестой. Целую несчётное число раз. Твой, П. Чайковский Сегодня, вероятно, кончу сюиту.

21 April Kamenka Yesterday I received your letter describing the story behind the letter to Aleksandra Valerianovna. Needless to say, I read this letter with inexpressible interest and excitement — but you behaved mercilessly! After all, you stopped at the most interesting place! I'm anxiously and feverishly looking forward to the continuation. I highly commend you for writing the letter. This was very wise, because it has to end one way or another — but some sort of resolution is necessary. I hope, Tolichka, that you won't lose heart if the answer is unfavourable! Anyway, a refusal from her will not be humiliating for your pride. As far as wounds of the heart of are concerned, you know from experience that they heal, and that time is a powerful remedy against such blows. We have had an anxious last few days. Sasha, despite the fact that she had been unwell recently, suddenly made up her mind to go to Kiev, because she had found a French governess there. She left three days ago, and the next day a telegram came for me to say that she was a little unwell, but also asking Leva to come for her. Leva left that very evening. Yesterday we waited all day for the promised message from him about the state of Sasha's health. In particular poor Tanya, who was very miserable. The message came this morning. It reports that Sasha is better and that they are leaving today. Of course, all this is nothing awful, but this incident confirms the general opinion that Sasha needs treatment and rest. Modest, Tanya and I decided to energetically insist that Sasha go to Karlsbad. She is suffering with her liver, and what's more, she's worn out and her nerves terribly upset as a result of life in Petersburg, and all her children's illnesses. Spring is coming on in leaps and bounds. The lilacs have started to bloom, and the lilies of the valley are already poking out. All this would be wonderful, were there not still minor obstacles to complete happiness. By the way, your novel has me a little concerned. I should like to know its ending as soon as possible, and also about your holiday. I'm going to Brailov on 1st May and will be staying there for around a week. My future plans are unclear. They need to take yours into account. There will be a series of celebrations here. Today is Aleksandra Ivanovna's name day, the day after tomorrow is Sasha's; the 24th is Yury's birthday, the 25th is mine, the 1st is Modestino's. Yesterday we received the news that Sasha Peresleni, at last, has become engaged. I kiss you countless times. Yours, P. Tchaikovsky I'll probably finish the suite today.
