Kamenka 16 June Dear and good Sofya Ivanovna!
Thank you for your letter. It afforded me inexpressible pleasure. I think that you exaggerate the virtues of my music, and I doubt that "Onegin" was a magnificent work. But undoubtedly this music was deeply felt to the utmost degree, and that it was the product of a deep and sincere passion. I knew in advance that certain souls would respond sympathetically to this composition, and that they would be affected by that same poetic inspiration which the author himself found when writing "Onegin". But it was extremely pleasant for me to receive such warm, eloquently expressed feeling as in your letter, and all the more from you, i.e. from one of the best and most sympathetic people I have encountered in life. Thank you once more, my dear Sofya Ivanovna! Why did you call your letter foolish? In fact, it was wise. Only wise people are unafraid to express their feelings. You are both wise and good, which, by the way, I knew from the very first minute of our acquaintance. Kiss your children for me, starting with Borya. I kiss your hand. P. Tchaikovsky |
