6 June, evening It's so miserable and difficult for me to live here that I want to leave for a while. Meanwhile I'm ashamed to leave them when I don't need to, and without a decent excuse. Therefore I ask you to send me a telegram along the following lines: "Your presence is required in Moscow in business. Come soon". I'll show them this telegram, and then won't feel so bad about leaving. I don't have the strength to endure this life. First my sister, then my niece fall ill, with one of the two patients more upset than actually suffering; the other, exaggerating her daughter's condition in her imagination, is wasting away from fatigue and mental torment. This bleak picture is simply devastating to behold. If I could just leave for a few days! Don't say a word to Anatoly. I embrace you, and, perhaps, I'll see you soon. Yours, P. Tchaikovsky |
