7 August Golubchik Tolya! For God's sake forgive me for again confining myself to a card. I'm somewhat unwell from chills (the house is awfully damp and cold, and I'm now already starting to heat it) and as a consequence I've been neglecting my work [1]. I need to work at full blast if I'm to finish on time. I've had the Laroches staying here for 2 weeks. At first I found them (or, more accurately, her) something of a burden, but now I've grown accustomed. Did you know what had happened to them? Without me they would literally have had nothing to eat. Heaven knows what a mess these people are in! The weather is astonishingly foul: I've never experienced a summer like this. I'm expecting Modest, who's now at Kamenka. In general, everything is propitious. I kiss you, golubchik. What a modest one you are: Ippolitov-Ivanov sent me the "Caucasus" newspaper with your speech [2]. Good for Tolya! Yours, P. Tchaikovsky |
