Париж 15/3 июня 1893 г[ода] Милый друг Коля! Вчера вечером приехал в Париж почти прямо из Кембриджа. Только здесь, очутившись один, я несколько пришёл в себя. Церемония возведения в докторское достоинство и сопряжённые с нею торжества будут предметом моих устных рассказов, ибо писать их было бы слишком долго, и я ведь скоро вас всех увижу. Скажу только, что было необыкновенно утомительно и трудно. Много курьёзного, странного, объясняемого традициями, сохранившимися ещё от средних веков. Жил я в Кембридже у профессора Мейтланда. Это меня бы страшно стесняло, если бы он и особенно жена его не оказались самыми очаровательно-симпатичными людьми, каких я когда-либо встречал, да ещё вдобавок русофилами, что в Англии большая редкость. Теперь, когда все кончилось, мне приятно вспомнить о моем успехе в Англии и о необыкновенном радушии, с коим меня всюду принимали, — вследствие особенностей своей натуры там я все время неистово терзался и мучился. От постоянного расстройства и напряжения нервов у меня все время сильно болели какой-то особенной болью ноги, и под конец я стал очень плохо спать. Теперь я начну двигаться по направлению к Гранкину, но с задержками. Путь мой будет: Базель, Цюрих, Инсбрук, Иттер (у Ментер), Вена, Волочиск и т. д. Из Вены буду телеграфировать насчёт лошадей. Paris 15/3 June 1893 Dear friend Kolya! I arrived in Paris yesterday almost directly from Cambridge. Only here, travelling alone, am I returning to myself somewhat. I will tell you all in person about the ceremony awarding my honorary doctorate and its associated festivities, because to write it down would take too long, and I shall be seeing you all soon. I can only say that it was extremely tedious and difficult. Many of the curious and strange traditions can be traced back to the Middle Ages. I stayed in Cambridge with Professor Maitland. This would have been terribly awkward for me, had he and his wife not turned out to have been the most especially charming and pleasant people that I have ever met, and furthermore were russophiles, that great rarity in England. Now that it's all over, it's pleasant for me to reflect on my success in England, and the remarkable exuberance with which I was received everywhere; owing to my particular disposition I was desperately tormented and tortured my whole time there. Among my constant disorders and nervous tension, the whole time I had an especially severe pain in my foot, and towards the end I slept very badly. Now I'm proceeding towards Grankino, but with interruptions along the way. My route will be: Basel, Zurich, Innsbruck, Itter (at Menter's), Vienna, Volochisk, etc. I'll telegraph from Vienna concerning the horses. I don't know where to write to Modya. Write to him about me.
