Dmitry Orlov (1842–1919)

Russian dramatic tenor (b. 1842 at Vladimir; d. 1919), born Dmitry Aleksandrovich Kalgin (Дмитрий Александрович Калгин), known on stage as Dmitry Orlov (Дмитрий Орлов).

Orlov made his debut in Glinka's A Life for the Tsar at the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow in 1867, then served with the Imperial Theatres in Saint Petersburg from 1869 to 1890. Here he premiered the role of Andrey in Tchaikovsky's opera The Oprichnik (1874)

Dedications

In 1875, Tchaikovsky dedicated As Over the Burning Ashes — No. 2 of the Six Romances, Op. 25 — to Dmitry Orlov.
