Imitation Russian Song

Tchaikovsky Research

Nothing is known about these musical sketches (TH 222) [1] which appear in Tchaikovsky's Notebook for 1884–85 [2], under the heading Imitation Russian song (Подделка под р[усскую] песнь). The themes — in C major (4 bars), in G major (5 bars) and D major (4 bars) — cannot be identified with any known Russian folksongs, although they share many characteristics of the genre [3].
