«Nessun maggior» и т. д.

Dijon. Friday  29 December 1878

This letter serves as a continuation of yesterday's, addressed to Tolya. I never imagined that something like this could happen to me. To be amidst the awful, bitter frost in Dijon! The streets are covered with an arshin's layer of snow. There are whole walls of snow beside the pavements. And all this in the south-east of France. The room is so cold that it's difficult to move around. I'm not in the least upset about what has happened. On the contrary, I'm even happy to become acquainted with the French provinces. Dijon is a very nice little town, but it strongly resembles the drawing in the weekly "Illustration": "Nos bons gens de provinces". The almost motionless nondescript faces; the small and narrow houses; the costumes of the men and women, which seem shabby after Paris. But nevertheless, a whole abyss separates Dijon with 40 thousand inhabitants from, for example, Kursk, which has no fewer. I was at the theatre yesterday; it's very good, and although the actors and actresses are all second-rate, they are very respectable. I was just at the museum, which has several Guido Reni, Carlo Doci, Perugino, and many fine paintings of the new French school. Besides this, it contains the famous tombs of the dukes of Burgundy. I went to the Saint Michel Cathedral — a splendid ancient church. The stores are magnificent; our hotel, although unprepossessing in appearance, is still very comfortable, and the food is excellent. In general, this feels like one is a country where centralization is much more obvious, because the gulf between Dijon and Paris is still deeper than that between Kursk and Petersburg — but in a more civilised country than our fatherland. We went to the station. Order is starting to be restored, and it will be possible to leave today at 1.45 am. A charabanc on runners has just gone past the windows, and the populace is gasping in amazement.

There's a lackey here who very much intrigues me. Having exceptionally respectable manners and physiognomy, he speaks Russian like a Russian. I suspect that he is a political refugee, dying from hunger, who took the first position that came his way.

Every hour of every day I remember everything that happened last year. Today, exactly a year ago, you and I left Milan for Genoa. At this moment, as I'm writing to you, we were in Alessandria, waiting for the train. "Nessun maggior", etc.

Yours, P. Tchaikovsky
