Gracious friend Vasily Vasilyevich!

I did not successfully complete my business with you, but you are partly to blame. You ought to have sent me the draft contract in advance, so that I could have time to consider all the points it contained. It was only as I was about to depart that my doubts began to trouble me. My weakness was to agree to your initial request to postpone the binding term for printing the symphony, and then to completely exclude this condition. But this way it turns out that only your sole rights would be protected, rather than mine. What is the point of my having a contract, if not to ensure the symphony does not gather dust in your archive for several years again? Realising this, I began to waver, and it was too late to discuss and debate. It was impossible to enter into new negotiations at the notary's! In short, having talked with competent and knowledgeable people, I dare not now release you from the binding term, and I ask you to pardon me for withdrawing my consent. Besides this, I have been pondering "Romeo". I recall that Bock was very disapproving of your dealings with them with regard to this overture. This all needs to be clarified, and so I have decided to postpone the signing of the contract. And since this instance proves to me for the hundredth time how incapable I am of business, then I have decided to give power of attorney to Jurgenson, who happens to be in Petersburg, will visit you, negotiate with you and sign the contract.

I have given the proofs to Laroche at his request. It was very much my fault that I did not have time to review it in Petersburg, but there was no opportunity whatsoever.
