3 мая Каменка. Корректуру получил и занимаюсь ею очень усердно. Ошибок, т. е. моих поправок, будет бездна, но вина не гравёров, а того же Мессера. Все больше приходится исправлять его пакостную работу. Зато я заранее знаю, что с 3-м и 4-м действием возни будет меньше. Не знаю, что ты мне посылаешь: 2-ю или 3-ю корректуру, но во всяком случае предупреждаю, что мне необходима ещё одна, последняя корректура, и всего лучше будет, если ты пришлёшь мне все 4 действия разом, после того как все мои теперешние поправки будут исправлены. Я совершенно против французских заголовок отдельных нумеров и убедительно тебя прошу все их выкинуть и велеть русские заголовки переставить на середину. К чему это? Ведь французского текста нет? Некоторые переводы заголовок чудесны. Напр[имер], chœur des filles!!! Это значит: хор блядей}!!! Пожалуйста, голубчик, все это к черту. Будь так добр, потрудись мне выслать метроном; мне он очень нужен, и я давно уже собирался приобрести таковой, да все забывал. Напр[имер], «Итальянскую фантазию» (которую я инструментую) невозможно будет выпустить без метрономных указаний. Пожалуйста, оказывай Толе всякую протекцию и ласку. Твой, П. Чайковский

3 May Kamenka I've received the proofs and am working on them most diligently . There will be a profusion of errors, i.e. my corrections, although this is not the engravers' fault, but rather Messer's. It's increasingly necessary to correct his sloppy work. But I know beforehand that the 3rd and 4th acts will be much less bother. I don't know if you are sending me the 2nd or 3rd proofs, but in any case be advised that I require one further last set of proofs, and it would be best if you send me all 4 acts together, after all my current amendments have been corrected. I am utterly opposed to French titles for the separate numbers, and I implore you to throw them all out and arrange for the Russian titles to be moved to the centre. Why was this done, when there is no French text? Some of the translated titles are wonderful. For example, choeur des filles!!! This means: chorus of whores!!! Please, golubchik, to hell with all this. Be so kind as to take the trouble to send me a metronome; I need this very much, and I've long intended to buy such a thing, but have always forgotten. For example, the "Italian Fantasia" (which I'm scoring) will be impossible to bring out without metronome markings. Please, render Tolya every patronage and kindness. Yours, P. Tchaikovsky
