Каменка 22 мая Милый Серёжа! Когда я сделал инструментовку моего «Итальянского каприччио» (я из фантазии перекрестил эту вещь в «каприччио»), то во мне возгорелось горячее желание, чтобы как можно скорее вещь эта была награвирована как в виде партитуры и голосов, так и в виде переложения на 4 руки. Мне невыразимо хотелось, чтобы переложение было сделано Вами, но так как для этого потребовалось бы сначала снять копию с партитуры, потом доставить её к Вам за границу, а засим ещё Бог знает, когда бы Вы имели возможность исполнить работу, то я задумался, и результатом вышло то, что я поспешил сделать переложение сам. Конечно, оно вышло не так хорошо, как если бы Вы его сделали, но зато теперь я уверен, что к будущему сезону всё будет готово и можно будет моё каприччио исполнять. Ужасно боюсь, что Вы немножко будете сердиться на меня за то, что я то умоляю Вас переложить мою дребедень, то сам поспешаю это исполнить и, таким образом, как бы недостаточно почтительно отношусь к Вам и недостаточно ценю готовность Вашу помочь мне. Но вся штука в том, что нужно скорее, скорее и скорее!.. Пожалуйста, Сергей Иванович, зайдите, если будет время, к Юргенсону и просмотрите мою работу, причём, разумеется, уполномочиваю Вас перечёркивать сколько угодно. Я старался сделать как можно проще и удобоисполнимее. Что Вы делаете, голубчик? Не напишете ли хоть два словечка в ответ на этот вопрос? Передайте мой поклон Варваре Павловне, Масловым, Владимиру Ивановичу и т. д. Ваш П. Чайковский

Kamenka 22 May Dear Serezha! When I completed the orchestration of my Italian Capriccio (I rechristened the thing from a fantasia to a "capriccio"), I was seized with an ardent desire to see this work engraved as quickly as possible, both as a full score and orchestral parts and as a 4-handed arrangement. I so very much wanted you to make the arrangement, but since this would have required first of all a copy to be made from the score, and then that this copy be dispatched to you abroad, and then God knows when you would have an opportunity to do the job, I thought about it, and the result is that I hastened to make the arrangement myself. Of course, it hasn't turned out as well as it would have if you had made it, but on the other hand, now I am confident that everything will be ready by next season and that it will be possible to perform my Capriccio. I am terribly afraid that you will be a bit angry with me for imploring you at one point to make an arrangement of my gibberish and then going off and doing it myself, thereby seemingly treating you with insufficient respect and failing to appreciate properly your readiness to help me. But the whole point is that it all had to be done as quickly as possible!.. Please, Sergey Ivanovich, if you can find the time, drop in at Jurgenson's and look through my arrangement: it goes without saying that I empower you to cross out as much as you like. I tried to make it as simple and convenient to play as possible. What are you doing, golubchik? You could at least write a couple of words in response to this question, couldn't you?
