Naples
1/13 March 1881

I arrived in Naples yesterday. Rome was awfully tiring; I was never out of my white tie and tails all week. The day before my departure, I dined at the Bobrinsky's for the 2nd time, and sat there until the depths of the night, having spent the evening of the previous day with at the ambassador's. Everywhere I was forced to play a lot, to talk about music, well, in short, to do everything I detest. Alas! This visit to Rome serves as proof to me that from now on I'll never be able to live there for very long. Countess Bobrinskaya made me promise that when I come to Rome again, I'll have dinner with them almost every day, and Ikskulsha wants to play 4 hands with me and for me to enlighten her musically. I came here with Kondratyev and Sasha. We stayed in a very good hotel. Yesterday and today we just wandered around the city, and tomorrow we'll start to explore some of the local attractions.

I received your letter today, dear Tolka, and I saw with regret that your state of affairs with Nadenka remains status quo. You say that it's desirable for Sasha to come, but I don't know if this is possible — can she leave Tanya alone? I myself would like Sasha to be assist you in this matter.

Thank you, golubchik, for Alyosha! Visit the Anchutins if they invite you, but I wouldn't want you to impose yourself on them for my sake. However, they are very nice people.

Naples is astonishingly good, but you wouldn't like it: the stench, the dirt is unimaginable, and everywhere they sell various horrid sea creatures, the mere sight of which would make you vomit!

I kiss and hug you tightly.

Yours, P. Tchaikovsky
