(Paris, Hôtel Continental).

Dear Tanyusha! I was terribly glad to receive your pattes de mouches from Kiev. It is pleasant to think that you are healthy, that you have won over the whole of Kiev, that you are going to Kamenka. where the Prince will soon be arriving — well, in short, this letter was in all respects a celebration for me. I must admit that I am somewhat homesick and sometimes even mope quite grievously, finding myself in a foreign land, and without Modest or Alyosha. The absence of the latter causes me a thousand small difficulties, whose complications are quite poisonous to my life. Well, it is it possible to appreciate the delights of Naples when there are buttons missing here and there on my trousers, when unimaginable chaos reigns in my things, and when every day when dressing I am driven to despair by all these trifles? Anyway, I'm not entirely alone; I came here with my friend Kondratyev, and this is a good thing for me, because I would otherwise be very bored. In Rome I was suddenly and unexpectedly obliged to lead a sociable life, and almost never left my frock coat and white tie. Amongst others, I dined twice at the Bobrinskys, who were friendly and kind in the extreme. The Countess is terribly fond of your mother, and was very interested in knowing everything concerning you.

Were it not for the catastrophe of 1st March, from which I still haven't recovered, then it's very possible that I would have travelled to Athens and Jerusalem with the Grand Dukes Sergey, Pavel and Konstantin. They should have been going there in 4 days' time, and there was talk of my being invited.

I think that I'll make it to Kamenka during Holy Week. I'm staying here for another 5 days, then going to Nice for a short time as a guest of Madame Kondratyeva, thence to Paris, and thus via Petersburg and Moscow to Kamenka. What I wouldn't give so that we could celebrate your wedding this summer! Just keep well, my dear girl. I kiss your delicious (albeit red) hands; convey a thousand hugs and all manner of tendernesses to everyone. Ask Nata to continue writing to me (Paris, Hôtel Continental).

Until we meet. I long for you with all my heart.
