Кам[енка] 11 окт[ября] Милый друг! Чувствую, что первым делом ты будешь смеяться, прочтя это письмо, — но прошу тебя отнестись к нему серьёзно и по возможности сочувственно отозваться на мою просьбу. Здесь есть один молодой человек лет 18 или 19, очень талантливый, очень смышлёный, тяготящийся своей теперешней жизнью отчасти потому, что семейная его обстановка скверная и неподходящая к его относительно высшему развитию, отчасти потому, что вообще его тянет туда, где больше жизни и света. Мечта его — получить какое-нибудь скромное местечко в городе. Здесь он служит счётчиком при экономии и пользуется самой безукоризненной репутацией честного, дельного малого, смекающего кое-что и в бухгалтерии. Он страстный любитель чтения; я обыкновенно снабжаю его книгами и таким образом с ним познакомился. Пишет он стишки очень порядочно для юноши, учившегося только с грехом пополам грамоте. Вообще это способный человек, очень страдающий от невозможности выйти из ограниченной теперешней сферы, и просит меня (как ты увидишь из прилагаемого письма) помочь ему. И я не могу не попытаться содействовать его желанию. Не нужен ли тебе такого рода человек в нотопечатне или даже при магазине? Ты увидишь из письма, что он не только грамотен — но даже очень грамотен. Могу тебе достать из каменской администрации самые лучшие аттестации. Голубчик, милый, возьми его себе? Что я помимо тебя могу для него сделать? А ведь это опять нечто роковое? Я его ни в каком случае не оставлю и не могу оставить здесь, ибо знаю, что он погибнет, если не помочь ему. Посмейся, потом тронься и ответь что-нибудь. Твой П. Чайковский Это совсем простой человек, без всяких претензий.

Kamenka 11 October Dear friend! I've a feeling that the first thing you will do after reading this letter is laugh — but I ask you to treat it seriously and to respond to my request as sympathetically as possible. There's one young man here of 18 or 19 years of age, very talented, very intelligent, and presently burdened by life, partly because his family situation is awful and not conducive to his relatively advanced development, and partly because he's generally drawn to where there is more life and light. His dream is to obtain some sort of modest position in the city. He works here as a clerk while setting money aside, and enjoys the most impeccable reputation as an honest, efficient little fellow, who knows something about accounting. He is an avid reader; I usually supply him with books, and this is how I became acquainted with him. He writes very decent poems for a young man whose education was only semi-literate. In general, this is a capable person who suffers greatly from the impossibility of leaving his present limited sphere, and he has asked me (as you will see from the enclosed letter) to help him. And I cannot help but try to facilitate his wish. Do you have need of this sort of person at the music press or even in the store? You will see from the letter that he's not merely literate, but even very literate. You can obtain the best references from the Kamenka administration. Golubchik, couldn't you take him on yourself? What else can I do for him besides you? Is this something fateful again? I won't abandon him in any case, and I can't leave him here, because I know that he will perish if you don't help him.
