Anatosha, golubchik! I cannot express to you how overjoyed I am at the news of your engagement. Anyway, I had a presentiment of this. Your very silence about your relationship with Parasha showed that a decision would be coming soon. Modest is unwell today and staying in bed. I decided to take Kolya for a walk, and when I returned, Modest, holding the dispatch aloft, said "splendid news". At once I sensed that it was from you, and that you were now a fiancé, and on opening the telegram and just reading the signature I already knew what it was. Do you remember how I always found Parasha so sympathetic, from her portrait and from Tanya's stories, just as my first sight of Mazurina instilled me with an invincible antipathy. If I always poured a little cold water on your talk of marriage, it was because I was fearful of mere infatuation on your part, without serious feelings. The point is that I never wanted anything more for you than to marry a fine girl, whom you would love not so such with romantic passion, but with serious love, based on an understanding of her attractive qualities. I've always told you and will tell you now that Parasha's wealth doesn't make me any more glad that you are marrying her. This probably will contribute to your well-being, but this is an entirely secondary matter. The main thing is that she is a girl from a sympathetic family, that judging from her face, she must be kind, and, most importantly, I'm pleased that you've become engaged a year or more after you met — meaning that this isn't a temporary infatuation, but rather based on mutual sympathy.

I'm looking forward with extraordinary impatience to your letter with the details. Poor Modest has had an attack of piles, and the doctor has put him to bed. Kiss Parasha's hand for me in the most tender manner. I hug you very, very tightly. Rarely in my life have I been so happy as today. Some sort of presentiment tells me that you will have a happy future.
