Неаполь 21 февр[аля] Душа моя! Хозяии виллы Postiglione оказался грабителем и разбойником. Пришлось переехать, заплативши ему вдвое больше против того, о чем мы сговорились. Теперь мы живём в городе. Здесь теснее, шумнее, но зато мы в порядочной гостинице, где меня будут обирать более деликатно и умеренна... Неаполь вообще город столь же изумительно красивый и чудный, столь отвратительный по людям, населяющим его. Это громадная шайка хищников, которые не стыдятся самым грабительским образам относиться к иностранцам. Для скорости я тебе вчера телеграфировал адрес, но боюсь, что переврали, и поспешаю написать его: Naples. Hôtel Métropole (Chiatamone). Последнее название писать, впрочем, излишне, достаточно Métropole. Переезд задержал мои занятия корректурой; завтра вышлю тебе Бортн[янского]. Твой, П. Naples 21 February My dear chap! The owner of the Postiglione villa turned out to be thief and a rogue. We've been obliged to move, after paying him twice what we'd agreed upon. We're now living in the city. It's cramped and noisier here, but then we are in a decent hotel, where they will fleece me more politely and respectably... In general Naples as a city is as astonishingly beautiful and wonderful as it is loathsome due to the people inhabiting it. There are enormous predatory gangs, who shamelessly behave in the most rapacious manner towards foreigners. For speed I telegraphed the address to you yesterday, but I'm afraid that they may have garbled it, and I'm rushing to write it: Naples. Hôtel Métropole (Chiatamone). However, the last name need not be written: Métropole is sufficient. The move has delayed my work on the proofs; I'll send you the Bortnyansky tomorrow. Yours, P. Tchaikovsky I've arranged with the post office for letters addressed to Villa Postiglione will be delivered here.
