3 июня Милый друг! Завтра я еду к Модесту; не знаю, сколько времени там останусь, — но, вероятно, недели 2 или 3, а может быть и больше. Еду туда потому, что бедный Модест, во-1-х), болен, а во-2), страшно расстроен и огорчён бесчисленными каверзами и пакостями, которые устраивают теперь разные родственники покойного Конради. Анатолий здесь уже три дня и завтра едет в Москву. Он расскажет тебе, в чем дело. Толя успокоился и представляет теперь с своей женой очень счастливую и милую парочку. 3 June My friend! I'm going to Modest's tomorrow; I don't know how long I'll be staying there, but it will probably be 2 or 3 weeks, or perhaps longer. I'm going there because poor Modest is 1) ill, and 2) terribly upset and distressed by the countless intrigues and dirty tricks that are now being perpetrated by various relatives of the late Konradi. Anatoly has been here for three days and is going to Moscow tomorrow. He will explain the business to you. Tolya has calmed down, and he and his wife now present themselves as a very happy and sweet couple. If you are going to write, then henceforth kindly write to the following address until further notice: Poltava province, Konstantinograd district, Novo-Nikolayevka post station, thence to Grankino.
