Киев 20 aвг[уста] Милый Леонтий Григорьевич! Пишу к Вам из Киева, где нахожусь проездом на один день из Москвы. Меня очень беспокоит вопрос о деньгах. По какому-то невероятному недоразумению Юргенсон Вам не выслал ни копейки. Теперь Вы говорите, чтобы вовсе не посылать. Но как, где, у кого Вы живете? Если я не буду знать, что вы обеспечены от нужды, то не могу оставить Вас без помощи. Убедительно прошу Вас откровенно написать мне (в Каменку) о Ваших обстоятельствах. Я считаю себя должным Вам по 25 р[ублей] в месяц от апреля, следовательно, за 6 месяцев. Без малейшего затруднения могу Вам прислать если не сразу всю сумму, то 50 р[ублей] теперь, 50 через месяц и т. д., до тех пор, пока опять начнётся установленная посылка 25 р[ублей] [в] месяц. Во из6ежание недоразумений, уплату этой субсидии я беру лично на себя без всяких посредников. Мне очень хотелось вложить в настоящее письмо денег, но, помнится, для денежной корреспонденции Вы давали особый адрес, — следовательно, мне нужен этот адрес. Тотчас же пришлите мне его и, ради Бога, будьте со мной откровенны. Верю и знаю, что Вы — честный и деликатный человек, — но, повторяю: мне невыносимо думать, что Вы нуждаетесь, а помогать Вам мне столь же легко, сколь и приятно. Отвечайте сейчас же и искренно. Kiev 20 August Dear Leonty Grigoryevich! I am writing to you from Kiev, where I am passing through for one day from Moscow. I am very concerned about the question of money. Due to some incredible misunderstanding, Jurgenson has not sent you a single kopek. Now you say not to send it at all. But how, where and with whom are you living? If I do not know that your needs are provided for, then I cannot leave you without assistance. I earnestly request you to write to me (in Kamenka) candidly about your circumstances. I calculate that I owe you 25 rubles per month from April, therefore, for 6 months. I can send you, without the slightest difficulty, if not the whole amount at once, then 50 rubles now, 50 next month, etc., until such time as the designated 25 rubles per month will resume. For the avoidance of misunderstandings, I undertake to pay this subsidy personally, without any intermediaries. I very much wanted to include money in this letter, but, as I recall, you gave a particular address for financial correspondence, and therefore I need this address. Send it to me immediately, and, for God's sake, be candid with me. I believe and know that you are an honest and sensitive person, but I repeat: I cannot bear to think that you are in need, and to help you is as easy as it is pleasant for me.
