8 октября 1882 Добрейший Николай Альбертович! Простите, голубчик, что так долго откладывал долг свой поблагодарить за включение девиц Тарнавич и Миллер в комплект. Я очень понимаю, как Вам надоедали подобными просьбами и как трудно было всех удовлетворить. Из Вашего письма только узнал я, что Тарнавич, взяв сдуру свои документы при отъезде, сама виновата в случившемся недоразумении. Тем более ценю я снисходительность Вашу. Что касается Миллер, то я расскажу Вам курьёзную историю, как мне пришлось попасть в покровители к ней. Отправление её в Консерваторию, которому, ввиду неимения денег, я всячески противился, и если у неё нет выходящего из ряда вон таланта, то те, которые её отправили, сделали тем большую глупость, что она имела место и заработок. Мне пришлось обещать ей уплату за неё в Консерваторию, но, по-видимому, она не воспользовалась и внесла собственные гроши. Ввиду этого я могу ей дать 100 р[ублей] на прожитие, и если встречается нужда, то напишу Петру Ивановичу, чтобы он ей выдал эти деньги. Но пусть она или кто-нибудь напишет мне об этом. Эта г[оспо]жа Миллер и вся история её поступления для меня загадочны. Признаюсь, что у меня нет ни малейшей охоты даже 100 р[ублей] давать ей, если она не в самом деле талантлива и не в самом деле бедна. Я ника[ко]го понятия об её действительных обстоятельствах не имею. Все эти дни я сиднем сидел над работой, потребовавшей от меня геройского усилия воли. Пришлось переинструментовать несколько нумеров «Орлеанской девы», для того чтобы опера могла идти, и нужно все это было сделать как можно скорее. Я так устал, что даже письмо это пишу с трудом. До свидания, г. Директор, думаю, что в конце этого месяца или начале будущего увижу Вас в Москве. Ваш, П. Чайковский Сашеньке целую ручки.

8 October 1882 Most kind Nikolay Albertovich! Forgive me, golubchik, for putting off for so long my duty to thank you for including the girls Tarnavich and Miller in the set. I know very well how pestered you are by such requests and how difficult it was to satisfy everyone. From your letter I learned only that Tarnavich, having foolishly taken her documents when leaving, is herself to blame for the misunderstanding that occurred. I appreciate your indulgence all the more. With regard to Miller, I shall tell you the curious story of how I ended up becoming her patron. In view of her lack of money, I was opposed in every way to sending her to the Conservatory, and if she does not have an exceptional talent, those who sent her have committed an even greater foolishness, since she had a place and income. I had to promise to pay for her at the Conservatory, but, apparently, she did not take advantage of this, and made her own contribution. In view of this, I can give her 100 rubles for living expenses, and if the need arises, I shall write to Pyotr Ivanovich so that he will give her this money. But let her or someone else write to me about this. This Miss Miller and the story of her admission are an enigma to me. I confess that I have no desire to give her even 100 rubles, unless she is truly talented and truly poor. I have no idea of her actual circumstances. In recent days I have been sitting idly over work that has required a heroic effort of will from me. Several numbers from "The Maid of Orleans" have had to be re-orchestrated so that the opera can go on, and all this had to be done as quickly as possible. I am so tired that it is even hard for me to write this letter. Until we meet, Mr Director. I think that at the end of this month, or the beginning of the next, I shall see you in Moscow. Yours, P.
