Roma, Hôtel Costanzi.

Lyonya! After receiving your letter and at first seeing that you had suffered a misfortune, I was awfully alarmed, but after reading it through to the end, I was reassured. It's even good that you've ended up in rooms, and not in the barracks. Who knows, perhaps while under the influence of drink you could have done something scandalous in the regiment, and it would have been much worse. Of course, it's a shame about the money — but all the same, it's better than some tale in the regiment. Let this serve as a lesson to you: why not have a drink occasionally, but it's not a good thing to become incredibly drunk. If you need money, then go to Pyotr Ivanovich and borrow 25 rubles; I think that will do for now. As for myself, then all I'll say is that everything would be splendid and I'd feel very cheerful if only you were here with me. I work a lot, walk a lot, and go to the theatre in the evenings, but sometimes I start to feel sad; I'm always by myself and alone. Now I'm waiting for Modest, who should have come yesterday, but something delayed him; then I'll be more cheerful. I think that by the end of the month we'll be going to Italy, and therefore write there: Roma, Hôtel Costanzi.

I kiss you hard, my golubchik. Look here: mind what you do when you drink!

Yours P. Tchaikovsky

Regards to Misha.
