Париж 9 февр[аля] Пожалуйста, прости меня, милый мой, что я беспокою тебя такими делами, как напр[имер], добывание сведений о моем Алексее. Анатолий сообщает мне как-то уклончиво, что Алёша очень болен и что он был у него, но, так как Параша запрещает ему входить в палату, дабы не заразиться тифом, то он только видел фельдшера, который сообщил, что через 5 дней будет перелом болезни и что он даст мне знать. 5 дней прошло, вестей нет, и я очень беспокоюсь, но телеграфировать Толе не решился, ибо боюсь, что Параше будет неприятно, если я по прошу его опять побывать в больнице. Итак, к кому же обратиться, как не к тебе, милый друг? Прости, пожалуйста. По получении сего письма попрошу тебя послать к Алексею ещё раз, и если он нуждается в деньгах, то дать ему денег сколько нужно (он лишнего никогда не спросит). То, что ты пишешь об консерваторских делах, произвело на меня самое удручающее впечатление. С одной стороны, какая-то близорукая бестактность и самообольщение, с другой — одностороннее и узкое патриотничанье, с третьей немецкая мелочность и склонность всюду втираться дальше, чем следует, — все это элементы бесконечных раздоров и дрязг. Головы нету! И, по-моему, величайшее несчастие, что устав требует для директорского места музыканта. Не будь этого пункта, против коего я всегда ратовал, — Консерватория, в лице Ник[олая] Ал[ександовича] Алексеева с помощником Альбрехтом имела бы превосходнейшего директора. Нельзя ли этот закон обойти? Не хочет ли Ник[олай] Алекс[андрович], чтобы я несколько своих сочинений издал под его именем, чтобы он имел предлог с подобающим ему достоинством и свойственными ему превосходными административными качествами, сесть на директорское место. Это единственный исход. Очень, очень горько. Пошлю завтра утром Ратеру то, что требуется. Обнимаю. П. Чайковский

Paris 9 February Please, forgive me, my dear fellow, for troubling you with such matters as, for example, obtaining information about my Aleksey. Anatoly tells me somewhat evasively that Alyosha is very ill and that he went to see him, but since Parasha forbids him to enter the ward, lest he contract typhus, he only saw an orderly, who said that in 5 days the disease will reach a turning point, and that he would let me know. Five days have passed, there is no news, and I'm very worried, but I haven't dared to telegraph Tolya, because I'm afraid that Parasha will be disagreeable if I ask him to visit the hospital again. Thus, to whom ought I turn if not to you, dear friend? Forgive me, please. Upon receipt of the enclosed letter I ask you to send it to Aleksey once more, and if he's in need of money then give him as much money as he needs (his requests will never be excessive). What you write about the Conservatory's affairs has made the most disheartening impression on me. On the one side, there's some sort of short-sighted tactlessness and wishful thinking, on another the most partisan and narrow-minded patriotism, and thirdly, German pettiness and a tendency to meddle much further than is appropriate — these are all the ingredients for perpetual squabbling and discord. With no-one in charge! And, in my opinion, it's the greatest of misfortunes that the charter requires a musician for the director's position. I've always argued against this point — the Conservatory would have had an excellent director in the person of Nikolay Aleksandrovich Alekseyev, with Albrecht as his assistant. Couldn't this rule be circumvented? Wouldn't Nikolay Aleksandrovich want to publish a few of my works under his name, in order to have a pretext to fill the director's position with his characteristic decorum and outstanding qualities as an administrator? This is the only option. I'm very, very upset. I'll send what's required to Rahter tomorrow morning. I embrace you. P. Tchaikovsky
