9 апр[еля], суббота Вчера день прошёл так. Утром по обычаю занимался, быв в довольно скверном настроении вследствие дурной, дождливой погоды. Завтракал в «Café de la Paix». К Тане не ездил, ибо она предупредила накануне, что сама приедет. Действительно вскоре после того как я пришёл с прогулки, Таня приехала с Лиз[аветой] Мих[айловной] более здоровая и бодрая, чем когда-либо. Посидев со мной немного, они распростились и отправились, как я узнал сегодня, пешком по St. Honoré до Palais Royal, потом через Avenue de l'Opéra и бульвары снова зашли в Richepanse за книгами и цветами и, посидев с Белярами (причём последние с восторгом говорили про тебя), уехали домой. Занимался я очень долго; мной овладело страстное желание кончить оперу и таким образом занять и усладить моё теперешнее пребывание. Обедал в «Européen». Alfred и Joseph с чувством отзывались о тебе. Очень хотелось в театр идти какой-нибудь, но решил, что нужно наконец покончить с Пахульским и проси дел весь вечер дома, разбирая эту неудобоваримую музыкальную тарабарщину. Даже нервы себе расстроил и всё-таки не кончил. Спал не ахти как хорошо. Погода сегодня несколько лучше. Завтракал в «Boeuf à la mode» необыкновенно хорошо и дёшево. У Тани был в обычное время и застал её в превосходном состоянии, — и помну нет о предстоящем. Хорош бы ты был, если б оставался здесь! Вернулся домой в 4 часа и занимался добрых 2 часа с ½, а теперь пишу и скоро пойду обедать в «Diner de Paris». Вечером следовало бы покончить с Пахульским, но чувствую себя слишком усталым и ощущаю потребность рассеяться. Всё газеты толкуют о случае на бульваре 3-го дня. Какой-то господин в припадке безумия выхватил револьвер и стал стрелять в толпу ожидавщую у Passage de l'Opéra: три человека ранены, из коих один, говорят, смертельно. «Fils de Martial» имел в «Gimnase» большой успех: лучше всех был Sandrol, про игру которого отзываются с небывалым энтузиазмом. Я думаю, что пойду сегодня в «Palais Royal», смотреть «Fond du sac» или в «Cabinet Piperlin», или в летний цирк. Целую крепко тебя и Колю. 9 April, Saturday Yesterday went thus. In the morning, as usual, I worked, being in quite a filthy mood due to the bad, rainy weather. I had lunch at the "Café de la Paix". I didn't go to see Tanya, because she had forewarned me the day before that she would be coming over herself. Indeed, soon after I came back from my walk, Tanya arrived with Lizaveta Mikhaylovna more healthy and vigorous than ever. After sitting with me for a while, we parted ways and they set off, as I learned today, on foot along St. Honoré to the Palais Royal, then through the Avenue de l'Opéra and the boulevards, calling in at the Richepanse for books and flowers, and after sitting with the Beliards (the latter speaking about you with delight), they went home. I worked for ages; I was overcome by a passionate desire to finish the opera, and thereby make the best use of my stay. I had dinner at the "Européen". Alfred and Joseph spoke with feeling about you. I was very keen to go to the theatre, but I decided that I needed to finally finish the Pachulski and spent the whole evening at home, scrutinising this indigestible musical gibberish. My nerves were even upset, and I didn't finish it anyway. I didn't sleep all that well. The weather is somewhat better today. I had lunch at "Boeuf à la mode", which was exceptionally good and cheap. I visited Tanya at the usual time, and found her in an excellent mood — and I remember nothing of what followed. It would have been good if you had stayed here! I returned home at 4 o'clock and worked for a good 2½ hours, while now I'm writing this and shall soon be going to dinner at the "Diner de Paris". In the evening I should finish off the Pachulski, but I'm much too tired, and I feel the need to distract myself. All the newspapers are talking about the incident on the boulevard on the 3rd day. Some gentleman, in a fit of madness, drew a revolver and began to shoot at the crowd waiting at the Passage de l'Opéra: three people were wounded, one of whom, it is said, mortally. "Fils de Martial" at the "Gimnase" was a great success: best of all was Sandrol, whose performance is being reviewed with unprecedented enthusiasm. I think I'll go to the "Palais Royal" today to see the "Fond du sac", or to the "Cabinet Piperlin", or to the summer circus. I kiss you and Kolya warmly.
