Paris

I arrived in Paris yesterday evening. The Beliards were overjoyed to see me and triumphantly announced that my No. 21 was available. After talking with them, I went to see Tanya, who wasn't expecting me. I caught her lying in a beautiful pose on the couch, dressed in a magnificent velvet robe lined with fur. Lisa Molas was sitting on the other side of the table. Both were extremely happy. Tanya hasn't been out in several days, and spends her life on the couch, reading novels. There's something amiss to do with her female organs. However, she appears cheerful and healthy. They're settled very nicely, and despite the fact that they sit at home a great deal, they are not fed up or complaining, but on the contrary, they're very afraid that they shall have to leave Paris soon. I sat with them for an hour and a half, and went upstairs to wash myself. The room had a pleasant and at the same time sad effect on me. How many different emotions I've experienced here, how much music, paper and ink have been used up — and now all this has vanished somewhere into the distant past. Anyway, everything is in its place, and only the thought that you weren't around was a vivid reminder that I'd not been here for ages. Then I went for a wander along the boulevards and had dinner at 10 o'clock in the evening at Margeries. Paris in general comes across to me as city where I feel at home. I felt neither any particular pleasure at finding myself on the boulevards, nor the slightest surprise at their splendour; it's just as though I left here only yesterday. And in fact everything down to the smallest detail is happening just as it did last year, and even the same familiar sorts of people are walking about. What was new, is that when I sat down to drink grog outside the Café Américain, out of nowhere Masalitinov came up to me, and who should be sitting inside the café but Golitsyn, who demanded I come over to him, introduced me to some local bigwig, and kept me there for around an hour. We arranged to have dinner together on Sunday. I returned home at one o'clock in the morning, and slept very well on my wonderful Parisian bed. I don't yet know whether I'll go to Rome, where I've been invited by Kolya Meck, who will be there on the 18th in our style.

I have very little money, and I'm wandering whether it would be prudent to go on a spree here, and go to live at Kamenka for free until the spring. I don't know if I'll make it to see Georges today. Most probably not, but tomorrow will be better. In the meantime, until we meet, my dear, good Modichka!

Yours P. Tchaikovsky
