14 February
Maydanovo

7 o'clock in the evening

Modya! I've arrived safely. My first impression was disappointment. That which seemed luxurious and magnificent to Alyosha, appeared motley, tasteless, shabby and dirty to me. I instantly and most categorically decided that Maydanovo would not be my permanent and eternal place of residence. But I can live here for a year, or at least until the start of next winter, and in the summer it will even be simply magnificent. For the time being we have settled in four rooms, of which one (the living room), doesn't count, because it is so cold that nothing can be done to heat it up. And the rest is fairly cold too; but there are fireplaces, and besides, the end of winter isn't so far off. The remaining rooms are quite cosy, although I find the cheap motleyness of their decoration to be somewhat horrible. The house is large, and in the summer we'll all have wonderful accommodation. The area is lovely, and you'll quite like it. The piano has been delivered. I very soon reconciled myself to the unsympathetic surroundings, having decided that this was only a temporary residence. Then again, the view from the windows, the silence, the knowledge that I am at home — this is all so pleasant that I spent the whole day in the most pleasant spirits. The cook turned out to be very cheap and splendid. As for the other servants, for now there is only a man (the husband of Alyosha's sister), but tomorrow the laundress should appear. After dinner I walked along the river to Klin (a wonderful stroll); drank tea a 4 o'clock; wrote a long letter to Bülow, I'm writing to you, I'll write some more to Tolya; I shall have supper, read, play, and go to bed. Alyosha is sleeping beside me — it's not all that bad. And in general it's very lively here. Despite a little disappointment, I am happy, content, glad, at peace. You will have a wonderful room upstairs. There's something very appropriate for Nikolay Dmitryevich — I'll write to him tomorrow. Meanwhile, I kiss and hug you tenderly.

Yours P. Tchaikovsky
