Maydanovo
25 February

I've just returned from Moscow, where I spent four days not particularly unpleasantly. I attended two meetings of the Musical Society in my role as a director. I heard my fantasia excellently performed by Taneyev and the orchestra, and was very pleased with it. It had great success with the public, more than the suite did (i.e. in Moscow). I spent quite a lot of time at home, i.e. with Tolya. Tasya is becoming more charming and sweeter every day, and such a darling that she's simply lovely, and she says absolutely everything, for example, the day I arrived she said "Uncle Petya is here, he says that Tata has bottomed" — blossomed! When he returns home, she asks Tolya, "Papa, where have you been?". Yesterday a drama unfolded in front of me. Tolya and I were at a concert (at the Bolshoi Theatre, in aid of students), and upon returning we found Panya completely distraught. It turned out that the maid, the unsympathetic Aleksandra, was drunk, and had been incredibly insolent towards Panya, causing her to have such powerful hysterics that she nearly killed her. Tolya summoned her husband, the coachman Vasily, and began to reprocah him for his wife's behaviour, but then she appeared and started making scandalous insults, and then Vasily the coachman stood up for his wife, and began to be insolent towards us as well. At first, Tolya, then I, screamed frantically until she disappeared. This morning they were both dismissed. I visited the Mecks twice; it was all just the same, and just as difficult and painful for me to sit with them.

I'm pleased to return home, but all the same, Maydanovo will never be my home.

Modichka! If Guitry's benefit takes place on the 9th, then I absolutely cannot come, because on the 10th there's a memorial concert in Moscow for Nikolay Grigoryevich, and it's absolutely impossible for me to not be there. I can't send this piece of paper. I'll write a little more tomorrow. No! I won't manage to write. Kisses.
