9 окт[ября] 1885 г[ода] Милый друг! Губерты сказали мне, что ты не считаешь возможным напечатать «Манфреда» в этом сезоне. Правда ли это? Дело в том, что я не могу упустить двух случаев: 1) в Петербурге в нынешнем сезоне дирижирует Бюлов; 2) в Москве, может быть, последний сезон дирижирует Эрдмансдёрфер, который, несмотря на все, все-таю-r один из немногих, на которых можно положиться. С другой стороны, писать с невероятным напряжением вещь, которую считаешь капитальной (в числе своих), и ждать, что она когда-нибудь будет исполнена, — я решительно не в состоянии. Что касается меня, то мне ведь все равно, по писаным или печатным нотам будут играть, — лишь бы непременно сыграли. Мне кажется что если сейчас же начать гравировку и иметь единственным корректором меня самого, то к февралю положительно можно поспеть. Но если ты в самом деле считаешь это невозможным, тогда я предоставлю тебе отказаться вовсе от «Манфреда» (это меня нисколько не обидит, ибо я отлично понимаю, что ты ради, моих капризов не можешь прать против рожна), но только знай, что я в самом деле не в состоянии дожидаться будущего сезона и хочу, чтобы во что бы то ни стало «Манфред» был исполнен. Не сердись на мой каприз (если это каприз) и ответь мне поскорее. Твой П. Чайковский Пожалуйста, пришли мне под бандеролью один экземпляр партитуры моего Коронационого марша.

9 October 1885 Dear friend! The Huberts told me that you don't consider it possible to print "Manfred" this season. Is this true? The point is that there are two things I cannot overlook: 1) Bülow is conducting in Petersburg this season; 2) in Moscow, this is perhaps the last season for Erdmannsdörfer, who despite everything is still one of the few who can be relied upon. On the other hand, after writing with incredible exertion something that I consider to be capital (amongst my own things), I'm decidedly not in a position to wait for it to be performed sometime. As far as I'm concerned, it's all the same to me whether they play it from written or from printed notes — so long as they definitely play it. It seems to me that if you were to start the engraving now and have myself as the sole proofreader, then you'll categorically have it done for February. But if in point of fact you consider this impossible, then you are free to forsake "Manfred" (this won't offend me in the least, because I understand perfectly well that you can't flog a dead horse just for the sake of my whims), but just know that I'm really in no position to wait until next season, and I want "Manfred" to be performed at all costs.
