27 февр[аля] 1886 Анатоша! Я уже писал Пане, что немножко надую вас, т. е. приеду неделею или 10-ю днями позже. Скучно высчитывать всё причины, но только верь, что крайняя необходимость заставляет меня отложить на несколько дней отъезд. План мой следующий: безостановочно и прямо я ехать решительно не могу, ибо от железной дороги у меня делается тоска и головная боль. Выеду я 18 или 20-го числа, никак не позже, и поеду, вероятно, на Харьков, где проведу один день для того, чтобы написать оттуда большое деловое письмо к Юргенсону. Отношения наши стали очень натянуты; я должен высказать ему некоторые вещи, которых на словах сказать не в силах, а откладывать не хочется. Из Харькова я должен заехать в Таганрог, ибо мне очень не хочется обидеть Ипполита, — а ведь скрыть, что я проехал, невозможно. Останусь у него день или два, и тогда уже к вам; отовсюду буду тебе телеграфировать. Ради Бога, никого ко мне навстречу не посылай и избавь меня от сопутничества Быкова и т. под. Мне нужно только одно чтобы ты устроил мне протекцию на тех станциях Военно-Груз[инской] дор[оги], где придётся останавливаться, особенно в Млетах, а также, чтобы в Владикавказе на почтовой станции мне дали хорошую коляску, как бы дорого это ни стоило. И больше пожалуйста, ничего. Затем убедительно прошу тебя побывать у Ипполитова-Иванова и сказать, объяснить что это не ложная скромность, а действительно отвращение ко всяким торжествам в мою честь, но что, во всяком случае, всякие встречи и торжественные приёмы будут мне очень неприятны. Я ему напишу, но ещё лучше если ты найдёшь возможным повидаться с ним. Засим целую тебя, голубчик мой, и прошу не сердиться. Во всяком случае, когда бы ни приехал, я останусь у вас 4 недели. 27 February 1886 Anatosha! I've already written to Panya that I'll be cheating you a little, i.e. I'll be arriving a week or 10 days later. It's tedious to recount all the reasons, but just believe that extreme necessity forces me to postpone my departure for several days. My plan is as follows: I absolutely cannot ride straight and non-stop, because the railway makes me fed up and my head ache. I'll be leaving no later than the 18th or 20th, and will probably go to Kharkov, where I'll spend one day in order to write a long business letter to Jurgenson from there. Our relations have become very strained; I have to tell him some things that I don't have the strength to put into words, but which I don't want to put off. From Kharkov, I must go to Taganrog, because I very much don't want to offend Ippolit — but it's impossible to hide the fact that I've passed through. I'll stay with him for a day or two, and then come to you; I'll telegraph you from everywhere. For God's sake, don't send anyone to meet me, and spare me from the companionship of Bykov, and the like. There's only one thing I need: that you pull a few strings for me at those station on the Georgian military road where I have to stop, particularly in Mlety, and also that they give me a good carriage at the post station in Vladikavkaz — it will be worth it, whatever the cost. And please, nothing more. Then I earnestly request you to visit ippolitov-Ivanov and explain to him that this isn't false modesty, and I really am averse to any celebrations in my honour, but that, in any case, any sorts of meetings or ceremonial receptions will be most unpleasant for me.
