Notes and References

  1. The date of Tchaikovsky's brief note is given by an annotation in someone else's handwriting [probably made by one of Mackar's clerks]: "arrived on 23 June [18]86 [N.S.] at 9:05 a.m." — note by Vladimir Fédorov in Revue de musicologie, tome 64 (1968), no. 1, p. 54.
  2. The address of Mackar's music shop which was situated in this famous commercial passageway in the very centre of Paris.
  3. Wednesday, 11/23 June 1886, was the last complete day that Tchaikovsky spent in Paris on that occasion (he departed for Russia on Thursday evening), and although he was very busy that day clearing the last bureaucratic hurdles that stood in the way of his taking the three-year-old Georges-Léon — the illegitimate son of his niece Tatyana Davydova — with him to Russia, he "still managed to drop in on Mackar in the afternoon", as he noted in his diary at the end of the day — see Дневники П. И. Чайковского (1873-1891) (1923), p. 69.
  4. The Hôtel Richepanse was Tchaikovsky's favourite hotel in Paris. He often stayed there during his visits to the French capital and was friends with its proprietors, Monsieur and Madame Bélard. The hotel still exists today, but unfortunately no documents from that period have been preserved there — note by Vladimir Fédorov in Revue de musicologie, tome 64 (1968), no. 1, p. 54, note 1.
